Kresge Foundation
Purpose:
The mission of the Kresge Foundation is to strengthen nonprofit organizations throughout the United States that advance the well-being of humanity. Kresge’s broad fields of interest have become seven narrowly defined programs – Arts and Culture, Community Development, Detroit, Education, Environment, Health, and Human Services.
Through the Capital Challenge Grant Program, the Foundation supports organizations' immediate capital needs, such as building construction or renovation, the purchase of real estate, and the purchase of major equipment. Grants are awarded on a challenge basis, usually one-third to one-fifth of the amount an organization has to raise to complete its campaign goal.
Giving: In 2010, the Board of Trustees approved 481 awards totaling $158 million; $134 million was paid out to grantees over the course of the year. More »
Every Day 2012 Grants for Volunteer Groups Serving Public Lands
Purpose:
The National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF), with support from Toyota Motor Sales USA, Inc., seeks to strengthen organizations and unleash their potential to serve their public lands. NEEF’s Every Day Grants will strengthen the stewardship of public lands by strengthening Friends Groups through funding for organizational capacity building.
Capacity building strengthens a nonprofit’s ability to operate more effectively at an organizational level. To understand capacity building, a nonprofit must think about how it operates, not about a program or initiative. Capacity building is strategic and requires reflection on organizational strengths and weaknesses.
Capacity building can take many forms, including, but not limited to:
•strategic planning
•marketing and communications
•leadership capacity (board or executive)
•improved fundraising
•assessments
•staff training
Successful applications will:
•Demonstrate a positive, collaborative partnership with a local public land site that has been in effect for at least one (1) year.
•Describe a needed and well planned project that can be carried out by the applicant and is replicable.
•Demonstrate that the project will contribute to the long-term sustainability of the organization.
•Demonstrate that the project will strengthen the organization’s ability to serve the public land site.
Giving: Each round will result in 25 grants of up to $5,000 each. More »
